Introduction

The Balsa machine, by default, displays a Tips & Tricks window at startup. This page tells you how to turn it off and on, and how to customize it.

Turning Tips & Tricks Off

The check box underneath the current tip turns off Tips & Tricks at startup.

Turning Tips & Tricks On

  1. Start the Settings program. In the Balsa user account, this is the Desktop Customization icon under the Settings tab. In the Advisor account, this is the Xfce4 Settings Manager menu item under the Applications | Other menu.
  2. Select the Session and Startup icon.
  3. Under the Application Autostart tab, turn on the checkbox labeled xfce4-tips (Tips and tricks).

Scriptures and Aphorisms

The button at the bottom left is a menu button. If you change it to Fortunes, it will display a random Scripture verse or inspirational saying.

Customizing the Tips & Tricks

The instructions in this and the next section are for advanced advisors who are feel comfortable with running the Terminal program.

  • Log into the advisor account.
  • Copy the tips file from the system into the advisor's directory this way: Start the Terminal program (Applications | Terminal) and type:
 cp /usr/share/xfce4/tips/tips ~
  • Edit the file ~/tips using the text editor. Each tip is followed by a single line containing just %.
  • Copy the tips file back to the systems directory and initialize it. In Terminal type:
sudo cp ~/tips /usr/share/xfce4/tips/
sudo strfile /usr/share/xfce4/tips/tips

Updating the SD card will overwrite the changes you make to the tips file in the system directory, so keep a copy of the tips file in the advisor's directory. Run the last two commands to reset it back to the version you've saved.

Customizing the Scriptures and Aphorisms

This is similar to modifying Tips & Tricks as above. The file is named proverbs and is in a different place.

  • Copy the proverbs file from the system into the advisor's directory this way: In Terminal type:
cp /usr/share/games/fortunes/proverbs
  • Edit the file ~/proverbs using the text editor. Each entry is followed by a single line containing just %.
  • Copy the proverbs file from the system into the advisor's directory this way: In Terminal type:
sudo cp ~/tips /usr/share/games/fortunes/
sudo strfile /usr/share/games/fortunes/proverbs

Updating the SD card will overwrite the changes you make to the proverbs file in the system directory, so keep a copy of it with your changes in the advisor's directory. Run the last two commands to reset it back to the version you've saved.
