After software is packaged, it needs to be built from source in a clean and controlled environment. This is a part of the testing process, and also a way of ensuring that packages aren't accidentally 'polluted' by the machine on which they are built.

We also want to build and test packages in a variety of distro settings, including current and previous distro versions, for both 32- and 64-bit architectures, of each major distro that we support. To help with this we have set up a build and test server called Hydra.
